Gidday All! We are Alison and Kerry and we call ourselves 'Wicker Man Masks' Not that we are men - but because our masks are influenced by the cult film 'The Wickerman'
I am 20 and my sister Kerry is 18. We live in Troon, Scotland and have been making masks for just over two years. Although messy it is great fun creating various animals and characters and even better when seeing them worn and coming to life!
Our masks start life as a papier mache rough mould, when dry we then create a face with a covering of plaster of paris bandage; this allows the mask to be rigid enough to be used over and over again. Once this phase is done details are added i.e horns or ears. We then cover the mask using either paints or fur depending on the mask style. The final stage is to add the last minute details and seal the inside with a special coating to prevent moisture.
Each mask takes about three days to make, some being longer depending on design.
If you want a full head effect, we recommend colour coordinated fabric attached from the back of the mask and draped over the head.
Masks are fitted with velcro strips for a tight fit to suit. For very young children we recommend masks are worn on the top of the head rather than over the face; velcro can be secured under the chin. Adult masks are suitable for all head sizes, although females with smaller heads may wish to buy a children's mask for a tighter fit.
We also enclose an instruction sheet with all our masks which gives advice on how to look after your mask. Masks that will be worn for lively performing, we recommend glueing small strips of sponge to the inside of the mask, this allows tight fit but also extra padding for long periods of wear.
All masks have either eye holes or face holes (as in fish mask), fur masks can be pierced with small holes to allow further ventilation.
